Over the weekend of the 15 to the 17 of October, 22 members of the Walking Group spent an enjoyable time walking in the Forest of Dean. On our way to the area we had the opportunity to spend some free time exploring Gloucester. We were reliable informed that the two places to visit were the docks and the Cathedral. I don’t think that many of us were particularly impressed with the docks, however the Cathedral was very impressive and well worth the visit.

Saturday Morning in Forest of Dean |
Saturday morning we travelled to The Forest of Dean Heritage Centre where we met our guide. During the morning we had a pleasant walk of approximately 4 miles. The walk was very hilly in places and because we tend to walk over fairly level footpaths in Essex, some found it quite hard going; others even began to wonder why it was called Walking for Softies. That said the walk though the forest was quite stunning and we all made it back to the Heritage Centre in time for a hearty lunch. During the afternoon we had another very hilly walk to the Blaize Bailey viewpoint which has a wonderful view over the Severn estuary. |
Sunday we returned to the Heritage Centre and had another four mile walk along the Bradley Hill Woodland trail. This was followed by lunch either in the Heritage Centre or the local pub. All things being equal I think the weekend went well and hopefully we will organise another walking holiday in 2011.
